Wedding Band Guide

A wedding band is worn every day and stays with you for years. This guide explains width, weight and gold karat from our atelier's experience. You are welcome to message us on WhatsApp whenever you are unsure.

Width: How It Looks on the Hand

Band width is measured in millimeters. Our bands run from 2 to 7 mm, and each design comes in its own width and up to 2 mm wider (7 mm at most).

  • 2–3 mm: Slim and delicate; sits in balance next to an engagement ring.
  • 4 mm: A popular width for women's bands.
  • 5–6 mm: A popular width for men's bands; in proportion on larger hands.
  • 7 mm: A bold, substantial look.

Wider bands cover more of the finger and feel slightly snugger in the same size. If you are considering 6 mm or wider, we suggest measuring with a wide ring if you can. With the slider below you can see each width with its weight options and at actual size on your screen.

Left to right: 4, 5, 6 and 7 mm bands on the same finger.

5 mmWeight options: 5–8 g

Our suggestion: 5 g or more in 14K, 6 g or more in 18K

Why Weight Matters

A band's weight is the amount of gold in it, and it sets the band's wall thickness: the metal between the inside and the outside of the band, measured with a caliper in the photo. At the same width, less weight means a thinner wall; bands made very light can bend and lose their shape over time.

This matters even more for bands with diamonds. Each stone is seated and set into the metal, so the seat for the stone and the metal that holds it both come from the wall; if the wall is too thin, a stone cannot sit securely.

That is why our weight options start at 1 g for every millimeter of width: a 4 mm band starts at 4 g and a 6 mm band at 6 g, with heavier options up to 3 g more in every width. We suggest as many grams as millimeters in 14K and 1 g more in 18K; the reason is below. At the same weight and karat, the width does not change the price.

Stone setting and polishing are handwork, so the finished weight can differ from the weight you choose by up to 10%.

Wall thickness is measured with a caliper; the seats for the stones are cut into this metal.

14K or 18K?

Karat shows the purity of gold. 14K gold is 58.5% pure gold and 18K gold is 75%; the rest are metals such as silver and copper that give gold its hardness and color. Both are fine choices; the difference is in color and everyday wear.

Feature14K18K
Pure gold content 58.5% (585) 75% (750)
Color A lighter, softer yellow A deeper, warmer yellow
Everyday wear Harder, so it resists scratches and knocks better Softer, so scratches show sooner
Suggested weight As many grams as millimeters: 5 g for 5 mm 1 g more than the width: 6 g for 5 mm
Price at the same weight Lower Higher
Best for Bands worn every day, especially with diamonds Those who love the deeper color of gold

Our suggestion: 14K for a band you will wear every day, especially one with diamonds. If you love the deeper color of gold, 18K is a lovely choice too.

18K is a denser metal, so the same weight takes up less space and the wall comes out a little thinner. That is why we suggest as many grams as millimeters in 14K (5 g for 5 mm) and 1 g more than the width in 18K for the same wall (6 g for 5 mm).

White gold in both karats is rhodium-plated for a bright white finish; the plating wears gradually and can be renewed at our atelier.

Ring Size

You can measure your size at home with the methods in our Ring Size Guide. Fingers swell a little during the day and in warm weather, so we suggest measuring in the afternoon at room temperature. For a pair, you can choose each band's size separately.

Not sure of your size? You are welcome to message us before you order. If a band does not fit, we can resize it for a fee.

Care

We suggest taking your band off for sports, heavy work and cleaning with household chemicals. You can clean it at home with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Small scratches that appear over time can be polished out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the width change the price?

No. The price is set by the weight, the karat and the diamonds; at the same weight and karat, a 4 mm and a 6 mm band cost the same.

Can her band and his band have different widths?

Yes. For a pair you can choose each band's width, weight and size separately, or buy just one band.

Why can the finished band differ from the weight I chose?

Our bands are cast, set and polished by hand, so the finished weight can differ from the weight you choose by up to 10%.

Can I have my band engraved?

Yes, engraving is free. On the band's page you can choose the text and the font for each band.

Can I try bands in person?

Yes, at our store in Istanbul's Grand Bazaar. If you are visiting Istanbul, you are welcome to message us on WhatsApp before you come.

Not Sure Yet?

You are welcome to send us a photo of your hand on WhatsApp, and we can look at the width, weight and karat options with you.
